YGO Lab and Master Duel

By YGO Lab3 min read

Master Duel is Konami's own free-to-play game, with its own card pool, banlist and collection. YGO Lab is for the TCG: every card on the TCG list, in the browser, against an AI that plays real TCG decklists.

What Master Duel is

Master Duel is Konami's free-to-play Yu-Gi-Oh! game on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Steam, iOS and Android, with cross-play. The rules are automated. You collect cards from packs, or craft them with points from cards you dismantle, and purchases are optional.

Its card pool and its Forbidden & Limited list are its own, separate from the TCG's, and cards arrive on their own schedule. Its computer opponents are in Solo Mode, where the computer's deck is set by each duel. We found no mode that lets you choose the deck the computer plays against yours.

What YGO Lab is

YGO Lab runs in the browser on ygopro-core, the open-source rules engine EDOPro uses. Its card pool and banlist are the TCG's, every card is available, and the opponent is an AI that pilots real TCG decklists: their combos going first, their hand traps on your turn.

Practicing for a TCG event

Master Duel practice transfers only partly to the TCG. The two banlists differ, some TCG cards haven't reached Master Duel, and the decks you meet on its ladder are Master Duel's. To rehearse a TCG matchup you need the TCG list on both sides of the table.

That is what YGO Lab is for. Build or import your TCG deck, pick the Rival deck you expect to face, and choose who goes first. The AI plays that deck's combo lines and holds its hand traps for your turn, and you can restart during the first two turns to try an opening again.

When Master Duel is the better choice

  • You want Konami's ranked ladder, events and Duelist Cup.
  • You enjoy collecting, and playing on a console or phone app.
  • You play Master Duel's format, not the TCG's.

When YGO Lab is the better choice

  • You are preparing for a TCG event and need the TCG card pool and banlist.
  • You want to practice against a specific deck, going first or second, when you choose.
  • You don't want to collect or craft the cards before you can test them.
